In 1912 the U.S. Army worked out
the right shape for a shoe.

Every shoe is built around a wooden foot. It isn’t shaped like one.
Shoes are made on a last — a solid form the upper is stretched and shaped around. Change the last and you change the shoe completely, no matter what the marketing says about the cushioning.
The last in nearly every women’s shoe tapers to a point at the front. Not because feet do. Because a pointed silhouette photographs better and sells better in a shop window, and because it has been done that way for so long that nobody in the supply chain questions it any more.
Your foot is at its widest across the toes. So almost every shoe you own is narrowest exactly where your foot is widest.
Once you see that, a lot of things stop being mysterious: the tender spot at the joint of the big toe, the little toe that has learned to sit underneath its neighbour, the fact that shoes feel fine in the shop and wrong by four in the afternoon.

Ten seconds, at your own table
You do not have to believe any of this. You can measure it.
- Put a sheet of printer paper on the floor and stand on it, barefoot, weight on that foot.
- Trace around it with a pencil held upright.
- Take the shoe you wear most and set it on top of the outline, heel over heel.
The widest part of your tracing will sit outside the shoe on both sides, while the heel disappears underneath it. That gap is not a sizing problem. Going up a size makes the shoe longer and moves the same narrow point further down your foot.
Do this with a shoe you find comfortable, not one you already dislike. The comfortable ones are the more interesting result.

Somebody measured this in 1912 and built the opposite shoe
Dr. Edward Lyman Munson was a physician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps who headed the Army Service Shoe Board in the 1910s. Over roughly four years the Board studied the feet of about two thousand soldiers, fitted thousands of pairs of boots and took radiographs of feet inside boots to see what the last was doing to them.
In 1912 he published the findings as The Soldier’s Foot and the Military Shoe, and the Army adopted what became known as the Munson last: snug through the heel and the arch, roomy and slightly upturned at the toes, so that the foot could sit in something close to the shape it holds when nothing is on it.
Read that against the shoe we make and you will find we did not invent our last. The U.S. Army did, from x-rays, more than a century ago. The Army kept using it into the 1960s, and it crossed into civilian production — by 1928 Red Wing reported that nearly half the styles in its catalogue were built on one.
“The construction of shoes for civilians is influenced almost wholly by considerations of fashion and style… the lasts are devised by persons grossly ignorant of, and quite indifferent to, the structure of the human foot and its physiological requirements as a covering.”
That is an Army medical officer, in print, in 1912, saying that civilian shoes are shaped by fashion and designed by people who never studied a foot. It has been sitting in the public domain ever since.

Six weeks
Seven years before Munson, an orthopedic surgeon in St. Louis named Phil Hoffmann examined 186 pairs of feet belonging to people who had never worn shoes, and compared them against roughly three hundred American shoe wearers.
His conclusion was that the feet start out the same. The proportions, the range of movement and the way the foot works are alike in both groups — up until shoes. After that the shod feet progressively change shape and lose function, and the unshod ones don’t.
Hoffmann recorded that a foot which had never worn shoes began to narrow at the front within about six weeks of being put into them.
He also found something that cuts against a great deal of what gets sold in this category: the height and shape of the arch had no bearing on the strength or usefulness of the foot. We take that seriously enough that we don’t sell you arch support as a mechanism. Shape is the mechanism.
The paper was presented in Boston in July 1905 and published that October. A colleague at the meeting recommended it be widely circulated so the public would know. It wasn’t. A physician writing about it a century later described it as a study largely ignored for more than a hundred years.

It isn’t the hours you spend on your feet
The explanation most people are handed is time and age: you’re on them too much, you’re getting older, your mother had the same feet.
In 1949 Samuel Shulman, a podiatrist serving in the Army of the United States, spent more than a year surveying feet that had never worn shoes — eight months around Kunming, two more around Calcutta — specifically choosing people who worked long hours on their feet under load.
Across that survey he recorded no cases of bunion deformity, no bursitis at the joints of the first or fifth toe, and no ingrown toenails. Nearly everyone he examined showed a marked space between the first and second toes, of the kind you see on a baby.
118 of the people he surveyed were rickshaw pullers — men who spent their days running on cobblestone and other hard roads pulling passengers. His verdict was that if anything, their feet were more perfect than the rest.
If hours on hard ground were the cause, they would have had the worst feet in the study. They had the best.

If you already bought “wide”, you have not tried this
This is the part that closes the loop on years of buying and being disappointed, and it is the reason most people reading this have concluded the problem must be their own feet.
A wide width is a bigger shoe. It is not a different shape. Wide, 2E and 4E add room through the heel and the middle of the foot — where your foot very likely never needed help — and keep the taper at the front exactly where it was. Board-certified podiatrists draw this distinction in the national press: a wide shoe is wider in the heel and midfoot as well as the toe box, while a wide-toe-box shoe is wider only at the forefoot.
Take a pointed boot and stretch it sideways and you have proved it to yourself. More room. Same shape. Still narrowing toward the front.
A study of 2,627 women aged 50 to 89 asked which toe-box shape they had worn most in each decade of life. Compared with those who had worn a very wide toe box, wearing a merely wide one was associated with close to double the odds of bunion deformity. Narrow, 2.39×. Very narrow, 2.70×.

So why doesn’t everyone just make this?
Some do — and they leave you on the pavement. The barefoot and minimalist brands got the shape right and then put about four millimetres between your foot and the concrete. For anyone walking ten thousand steps a day on hard ground, that is not a solution, and their own customers say so out loud.
The cushioned brands went the other way. They got the softness right and kept the pointed front, because the front is where the styling lives.
So the choice on offer has always been room or cushion. We didn’t accept it. The Suite puts roughly 25mm of soft EVA under a foot-shaped last, snug through the heel so roomy never turns sloppy.
Neither half of that is ours. The shape belongs to Munson and to everyone building on it since. The cushioning is ordinary materials science. The pairing is the part nobody was selling.

What we don’t claim
You have read enough shoe pages to know that this is usually where the page starts promising things. Here is the other version.
If you already have a bunion, room is not reversal, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What room does is stop pressing on it.
Clinical literature treats footwear as one factor among several, aggravating rather than solely causing. Heredity matters. We are not going to overstate a real finding to make a better headline.
We make shoes. If something about your feet worries you, the person to ask is a podiatrist, not a footwear company.
You may find claims that the last eliminated nearly all foot problems in the military, or a story about spies. Those trace to a company selling shoes, not to any archive. We left them out.
